Brisbane's Premier Nightlife and Entertainment Precinct
Fortitude Valley was settled by Scottish immigrants from the ship Fortitude in 1849. Named after their vessel, the suburb became a hub of commerce from the late 1890s with rival department stores Beirne and McWhirter. In the 1950s, it was the largest shopping precinct outside a CBD in Australia. After decline in the 1970s, the Valley experienced an urban renaissance with nightclubs and live music. Chinatown Mall opened in 1987 and in 2005, Fortitude Valley became Australia's first dedicated Special Entertainment Precinct following the 'Save the Music' campaign. Today it's Brisbane's premier nightlife and cultural destination.
